UPDATE ON BEAVERTON SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL AND WASHINGTON COUNTY 'PROPOSED PLAN'

After an on-site review, input from the school community via a PTO meeting, and a meeting of our district Safe Routes to School Coordination Team, they would like our input on the following safety improvement proposals:

  1. We would like the county to create a center turn lane going northbound on 153rd Avenue (in front of the school) to allow parent motorists waiting to turn into the parking lot to cue up in a middle turn lane. This may require the county to designate this area as a no parking zone. (See #1 on the attached map.) Currently, motorists are cuing up on the far right hand side of the street and thru traffic is creating a center lane. As motorists in the cue line turn into the parking lot, this creates a collision hazard for cars in the center thru lane.
  2. We would like the county to install a crosswalk from the Oak Hills Church parking lot across 153rd Ave. The District has agreed to staff a Crossing Guard at this location, if the crosswalk is built and Carl Leep at Oak Hills Church has graciously offered the use of their parking lot during arrival and departure time for parents to park and walk up to the school to pick up students. (See #2 on the attached map.) Additionally, we would ask the county to install No Parking signs around the island on 153rd Ave, just south of the church. Currently, parents are parking around the island creating additional congestion in this area and a hazard for students and parents as they cross traffic to access sidewalks and paths at the front of the school campus. The school would plan to encourage the use of the church parking lot for those parents currently parking to pick up students, and also those who are lining up to pick up in front of the school.

Please see the photo of the PROPOSED PLAN below from the county. And please send your comments to HOA President Jim Phelps: oakhillshoapresident@gmail.com
